Primary & Secondary Public Schools

Each locality in Greater Richmond has its own public school system and provides a full range of career prep, college prep, and honors/advanced placement classes. All four localities offer foreign language classes, in some cases starting at the elementary school level. French, German, Spanish, and Latin are the most frequently offered languages, but other languages also may be available, depending on the school system. All four school systems have International Baccalaureate programs, rigorous programs at the middle and high school levels that develop intercultural understanding and respect and lead to a qualification that is widely recognized by the world’s leading universities. 

  • Chesterfield County Public Schools

    International Baccalaureate: Available at Meadowbrook and Midlothian high schools
    Languages taught: French, Spanish, German, Latin and Japanese

  • Hanover County Public Schools

    International Baccalaureate: Available at all four high schools (Atlee, Hanover, Lee-Davis, and Patrick Henry)
    Languages taught: Latin, Spanish, French, German, Russian and Japanese

  • Henrico County Public Schools

    International Baccalaureate: Available at Moody Middle School and Henrico High School (Henrico High School offers both Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme)
    Languages taught: Latin, French, German, Japanese and Spanish

  • Richmond City Public Schools

    International Baccalaureate: Available at Lucille Brown Middle School and Thomas Jefferson High School (Thomas Jefferson High School offers both Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme)
    Languages taught: Spanish, French, Italian, German, Latin and Japanese

  • Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies

    Languages taught: French, German, Spanish, Classical Greek, Russian, Italian, Latin, Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, and American Sign Language

Note: The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme is for grades 6-10; the Diploma Programme is for grades 11-12.
